I slept in this morning! It was wonderful and something I don't usually get to do on a Monday morning. As I lay in bed and let the noon day son shine through my window, I found myself asking just "why exactly do I get to enjoy this wonderful work free day?"
Our reliable friends at Wikipedia tell us that Memorial Day is "observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009)...it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service."
I do not personally know anyone who has died while in service of their country, but thinking about those who gave their lives for this country led my mind to think about all the people I am fortunate enough to know who have served this country or still are. Brave men and women who have dedicated themselves to the military service. I know that the day to commemorate those who have severed or are still serving is Veterans Day, but I don't think that our soldiers who are still with us get enough Thanks.
We as Americans may not agree with the reasons for the battles we fight today, but we should whole heatedly support the troops that fight them. We owe them our lives and they should be showered in praise while serving and after their return home. We also need to give them both the emotional and psychological support they need, which these days seems to be lacking. I wish them all comfort and a swift return.
My prayers and thanks go out to the families of the soldiers who have died, but also to soldiers who are still fighting. To those men and women (and their families) who every day give everything they have to defend the freedom that I sometimes take for granted. I say: Thank You
Happy Memorial Day!
